Etna by Jeep: One of the most evocative experiences in Eastern Sicily is without doubt an excursion to Mount Etna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the highest active volcano in Europe (3,340 m).
Known by locals as “a muntagna”, Etna offers a truly unique journey through dramatic landscapes, ancient lava flows, rare vegetation and breathtaking views stretching from the Ionian coast to Calabria.

Traveling by jeep along off-road trails, the tour explores some of the most emblematic sites on the northern slope of the volcano. Among them, the vast 1923 lava flow, which reached the town of Linguaglossa, revealing abandoned rural structures such as ancient palmenti, once used for wine production, surrounded by broom plants (Genista aetnensis).

The route continues to the 2002 lava front, one of the most powerful eruptions of the last century, reached through forests of chestnut and oak trees, a striking reminder of Etna’s raw energy.

Hidden within the Ragabo pine forest lies the Grotta di Corruccio, a lava flow cave at 1,350 meters above sea level, offering a fascinating glimpse into the volcano’s inner dynamics.

A short walk leads to the Monti Sartorius, a series of extinct lateral craters formed in 1865. This area, rich in endemic flora, volcanic bombs and Etna birch trees (Betula aetnensis), rewards visitors with sweeping views over the Ionian coastline, from Riposto to Taormina.

The excursion concludes at Piano Provenzana (1,800 m), the Etna Nord ski resort, deeply marked by the 2002 eruption. After a coffee break, a short walk among the remains of the former Le Betulle hotel offers a powerful encounter with the volcano’s destructive force.
