Serbian Athens and Gibraltar on the Danube

Take a walk through the city centre and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of Novi Sad. Admire the Austro-Hungarian architecture and urban design. Discover the multicultural and multi-confessional spirit of Vojvodina as you visit the Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant churches, as well as the Synagogue. Stroll through the Danube Park and continue to the Petrovaradin Fortress, often called the Gibraltar on the Danube.

Itinerary duration: 2 hours

Meeting point: City hall of Novi Sad is starting point for our Novi Sad Guided Tour

First stop:

The Monument of Svetozar Miletić who was once mayor of Novi Sad. Why is his statue turned opposite from the City hall? Catholic church The Name of Mary – example of neo-gothic architecture.

Second stop:

Synagog of Novi Sad – built by Neolog jewish congregation from 1904-1909. Today represents cultural centre where concerts are taking place.

Third stop:

Jovina Street and monument of Jovan Jovanović Zmaj – beloved Serbian poet, doctor and politician. Why was he called “Zmaj” which means dragon? At this stop we will talk about similarities and differences between cyrillic and latin alphabet.

Fourth stop:

Orthodox cathedral dedicated to Saint George. This baroque church was decorated with icons painted by the most famous Serbian painter Paja Jovanovic. Here we will talk about Serbian tradition and family celebration of saint protector what we call “Slava”.

Fifth story:

Danube street – why did they put the canon ball in the facade of one house? How the revolution of 1848 affected life in Novi Sad? This street is known for ice cream shops so we will try the one that is possibly the best of all.

Sixt stop:

Danube park – nowadays popular place to take a stroll, rest and have a piknik. What was there in the past and why is it called Danube park?

Seventh stop:

The Varadin Bridge – the most famous bridge of Novi Sad that is also called Duga (*rainbow in english). You will learn about bridges of Novi Sad and measures that were taken to protect Novi Sad from being flooded in the case of the fall of train bridge.

Eight stop:

Petrovaradin fortress – one of the best examples of Vauban architecture in Eastern Europe. You will learn about its clock tower, why can’t it be protected by UNESCO and about its 10 miles (16 km) of tunnels below the ground.

Have a coffee in one of the bars at the fortress while enjoying spectacular view from the fortress.

We have optional guided visit of the tunnels of Petrovaradin fortress available for groups 3+ with extra charge 10e pp. Request have to be made in advance.
