Herceg Novi Walking Tour

Herceg Novi Walking Tour by Bosko, Herceg Novi Tour GuideHerceg Novi is a town built on steps and layers — stone fortresses above, palm-lined terraces in between, and the sea always present below. It’s often called the “town of stairs,” but what stays with most visitors is the mix of sunlight, greenery, and stone that gives the town its calm Mediterranean feel.

The tour begins at Kanli Kula Fortress, a 16th-century stronghold once used as a prison and today one of Herceg Novi’s most recognizable landmarks. From here, the town opens below you — rooftops, stairways, and the curve of the bay — giving the perfect orientation before we step into the Old Town.

Entering through Belavista Square, beside the Church of St. Archangel Michael, we move through quiet passages and small local corners where the town feels most authentic. As we descend, we pass through the heart of the Old Town and reach areas such as Mićo Pavlović Square, with nearby churches including St. Jerome’s Church and St. Leopold Mandić’s Church, adding a softer, lived-in layer to the town’s story. From the Old Town we continue toward the Clock Tower (Sahat Kula) and on to Nikola Đurković Square, a key gathering point for local life, festivals, and summer evenings.

The pace stays calm and flexible, with time for questions, photos, and short pauses. On the way down toward the sea, we pass Gradska Kafana, one of the town’s finest viewpoints over the entrance of the bay. If you’d like, this is a natural place to pause for a short coffee — to sit where locals sit, watch the promenade rhythm, and take in the view without rushing.

We finish at Škver, the old harbor and marina area, where the promenade gives a different perspective: fortresses above, boats below, and a lively coastal scene of cafés and restaurants. The Herceg Novi walking tour can end here with free time by the sea, and if you wish, I can recommend a good spot for lunch right on the waterfront.
